Justice League: Iceland Scenes Feature Aquaman Characters & Cast

Director Zack Snyder, once again illustrating his knack for using social media to promote his DC Extended Universe movies, commemorated the end of production in the U.K. on Justice League by releasing an online video composed of surprisingly revealing behind the scenes footage and material from his next DC comic book adaptation. However, filming on Justice League in general is not yet done; the production has instead shifted to Iceland, with the small village of Djúpavík serving as the primary setting for the sequences that are being assembled there.

The initial reports of the Justice League production moving to Iceland prompted speculation that the scenes being filmed there are a continuation of a sequence featured in the movie’s San Diego Comic-Con teaser trailer; namely, one wherein a bearded Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) has made his way to a small fishing village that is able to get by thanks to the kindness of a mysterious fellow named Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman (Jason Momoa). The latest report for the Justice League Iceland shoot lends further credence to the idea, revealing that the scene(s) being filmed there involve multiple Aquaman characters/actors.

Icelandic website DV (hat tip to Batman-News) is reporting that the Justice League cast members involved with the Iceland scenes include Momoa, as well as Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe; who are playing Queen of Atlantis (and Aquaman’s wife) Mera and Aquaman ally Vulko, respectively. Affleck and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) are likewise going to be part of the scenes being shot there, with Affleck having confirmed as much during the press tour for his new starring vehicle, The Accountant. Momoa has also been posting pictures to his Instagram account (see the one below, for case in point), from the ongoing Justice League production there.

Too much fun. Love working for this man. Mahalo zach ALOHA AC

Although the Aquaman scenes in the Justice League teaser trailer only show Bruce Wayne meeting with Arthur Curry, it stands to reason that Diana Prince would eventually join him there; in order to help the effort to recruit Aquaman for their newly-formed “League” when Bruce’s initial attempt doesn’t pan out. Justice League in general will revolve heavily around Bruce and Diana’s mission to find the other Meta-Humans of the DCEU – something that sounds all the more promising, seeing as the two characters were among the most widely-praised elements featured in Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice from earlier this year.

Directors Rick Famuyiwa’s The Flash and James Wan’s Aquaman are the next DCEU films lined up to enter production after Justice League wraps up principal photography. The timing of the Iceland shoot for the latter will therefore give Momoa and his future Aquaman solo film costars a chance to work together, before they reunite for production on Wan’s superhero movie. Those scenes should also help to further bolster the sense of interconnectivity between the DCEU installments, by setting up Atlantis society and its citizens as part of this cinematic universe before they step fully into the spotlight in 2018.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The FlashThe BatmanDark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
